In her own words: “We’re the company clients come to when they don’t want the typical remodel. We definitely design outside the box and we’re not afraid to be bold.”
Bonnie Bagley Catlin isn’t afraid of taking design risks. The owner and lead designer of Colorado-based Signature Designs Kitchen, Bath and Interiors, she specializes in remodels that completely transform a space. Working with an eclectic clientele, she relies on years of experience in the design-build industry to create approachable, high-end designs that optimize a space. “I know how to make the wow happen,” she says. “And I love to push the limits of a design as far as clients are willing to let me.”
Western eclectic. Catlin hails from Portland, Oregon, where her passion for design emerged early. After finishing school in 1997, she set her sights on one of the top local design firms, where she worked as an assistant to eight different designers. “I owe my design flexibility to meeting the ever-changing demands of each designer during those early years of my career,” she says.
After her years in Portland, Catlin went to work for design-build firms in Seattle and San Diego, where she learned about the entire design-build process. “I learned about everything from demolition and framing to electric work and plumbing,” she says. “That very thorough structural training also gave me the ability to push design boundaries.”
Flow and function. Catlin approaches each project the way an architect would, first establishing plans and then selecting materials. “I look at each project with fresh eyes,” she says. “Clients don’t always know what they want but usually have a few things in mind. I try to bring new elements to each design to make it distinctly their own.”
When designing a space, Catlin focuses on flow and function before beauty. Once she’s determined a space’s optimal layout, she implements the aesthetic aspects of the design. “I make things exciting and fresh for clients and it never gets stale for me,” she says.
